Bucharest, October 13: Paul Sfîrlea, the winner of Diageo Reserve World Class Bartender of the Year Romania 2014 – 2015 came on 13th place at the Global Final competition held in Cape Town this September. The competition was won by Michito Kaneko from Japan. The World Class Bartender of the Year show puts the spotlight on bartenders from across the world as they compete for one of the most prestigious titles in the bartending community. Over the past year, contenders from the most esteemed bars around the world have competed in local and regional heats, each aspiring to attain the best place at the Diageo Reserve World Class Global Final.

Diageo Reserve World Class, the world’s most famous international contest in search of the best bartender in the world, is at its second edition in Romania, organized by PPD Romania, Diageo’s local partner. The best bartenders and mixology experts in Romania fought again against each other in a competition in which creativity, craft, talent and charisma were key in winning the coveted award.

Paul Sfirlea ranked 13 from 6000 bartenders all around the world that competed first for the national title  and finally run for the global title competing against 54 other talented contenders. Paul    Sfirlea now works in Cluj Napoca at the bar called Charlie, one of the best places in Romania to have a cocktail.  His performance was appreciated by the judges as he came 2nd, at Retro. Disco. Future  challenge and on the 5th place at “Against the Clock” challenge, a high-pressure speed round where competitors prepared a minimum of eight cocktails in just 10 minutes.

The experience of the final has been the best ride of my life, a unique journey of self discovery. South Africa was the most beautiful place on earth for me because I had the chance to meet and spend time with the best bartenders in the world. This is definitely a turning point in my life and i am looking forward to future challenges,” commented Paul Sfirlea.

Featuring intense competition, spectacular, star-studded events and the convening of fine-drinking industry elite, international celebrities, and global tastemakers – which bartender will rise above to win the prestigious international accolade of the industry.

The talent on display this year has surpassed our already high expectations. It was almost impossible to predict who the top six would be because the level of skill was consistent across all competitors – exceptionally high,” said Spike Marchant, WORLD CLASS judge and global brand ambassador. “But what else would you expect when you have the best bartenders in the world under one roof? It was the toughest competition weve ever had the honour of judging.

Johanna Dalley, Global Director for World Class said: “Since its inception, WORLD CLASS has been passionate about giving the best bartenders in the world the global spotlight they richly deserve – these are incredibly talented professionals whose skill is on a par with the world’s best chefs but who also deal directly with the public on a nightly basis, have the flexibility to create great drinks that to the exact specification of each and every one of their guests, be part sommelier, part maître d’, part host, part alchemist, part entertainer and part confidant”.

In elevating the craft of bartending, Diageo Reserve WORLD CLASS has become a leader in setting trends and standards for fine drinking experiences in the best establishments worldwide.
